How to Handle an Odd Number of Pickleball Players

Turn unavoidable byes into an even, transparent rotation.

Byes are not the problem

Uneven byes are the problem. Tell players how many sit each round and use a visible rotation. Select byes from the people with the most games, breaking ties by who has waited least recently.

Avoid consecutive waits

When possible, prevent the same player from sitting in back-to-back rounds. In very small groups or short schedules this may be mathematically impossible, so explain the constraint rather than hiding it.

Use the bye well

A resting player can record scores, call the round timer, or warm up. Clear roles make a bye feel like part of the event rather than an omission.
