How to Reduce Repeated Pickleball Matchups
Use a simple scoring method to improve partner and opponent variety.
Treat pairs as data
Store every partner and opponent pair without regard to order. Alex–Blair is the same pair as Blair–Alex. Before accepting a proposed court, look up how often all six relevant pairs have already occurred.
Weight partner repeats more
Repeating a partner changes two players’ experience for an entire game, so give it a larger penalty than an opponent repeat. A practical scoring model can weight partner repeats four to six times more heavily.
Know when repeats are unavoidable
Small groups and long sessions eventually exhaust unique combinations. At that point, minimize the maximum repeat count and keep game totals even. A transparent fairness report is more useful than claiming a mathematically impossible perfect schedule.
